Movie Trailers

Movie trailers. An art form all in itself. A commercial ad typically used for movies as well as other media like games, tv shows, books, concerts and more.

Online behind national news trailers actually rank in the top highest viewed media. The first trailer to actually be shown in American theaters was in 1913 from the mind of a man named Nils Granlund an advertising manager for a theater. The trailer was for an upcoming production of a broadway play entitled “The Pleasure Seekers”. Little did Nils know he would pioneer what would come to be a modern day staple for any piece of media and product still being used in mass today.

With that being said I adore movie trailers. As a kid my family would go to the movie theaters every weekend and the trailers playing and booming through the speakers was always my favorite part.

From all different genres these are just a handful of my favorite trailers released throughout the years.

The Florida Project (2017)

The Florida Project was released back in 2015 to critical acclaim. Following a moment in the life of Moonee a six year old girl living at a florida hotel. I’ve seen the movie and the trailer evokes the same feel of the movie, a very somber kind of coming of age where adolescence clashes with the harsh reality of adult life. Some trailers can do a bait and switch but this one does a very good job of telling you everything you need to know.

Wakanda Forever (2022)

The sequel to 2018’s Black Panther, this trailer released with many not knowing how the franchise would carry on due to the unfortunate untimely death of it’s lead star Chadwick Boseman. Chadwick had left a lasting impression on his family, friends, cast and the world and this trailer barely has any words in it but with the chosen music and single imagery of Chadwick I feel like it gives a very sentimental feel which was reflecting of how the audience (world) had felt.

It Comes At Night (2017)

A horror film that gives everything I feel like any trailer should. It gives you a sense of mystery as to what the plot could be by giving you just enough to be intrigued. Coupled along with the eeriness in the beginning of the trailer with only worried talking as it ramps up with elevated music and disjointed shots. Chefs kiss.

Black Mass (2015)

With pretty much the whole ad being one intense scene from the movie this trailer is another example of setting or conveying a mood (crime being the main theme) without giving too much away of the stories plot.

The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty (2013)

Based off the shorty story of the same name this trailer works like a music video with pretty much no talking until the end. The music and imagery of the fantastical work in tandem very well making you feel like the movie is a real adventure.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2011)

How could I talk about trailers and not talk about the trailer that turned heads when it came out. I haven’t seen a trailer really like this since but it’s another one that’s essentially a music video.

Nosferatu (2024)

When I first heard of this remake I couldn’t imagine what it would look like given my only experience with Nosferatu is in that episode of Spongebob. This trailer gives a very modern day feel of horror while still not veering too far off from a classic feel
